Well, there’s always the possibility of maintaining 2 separate accounts, you would just have to go through the hassle of using this one for the stuff you already use it for and using the new one for the name and for whatever you might use that for if the use would even be different at all. It makes sense for them to make the practicality of changing the name of your account a paid feature especially since it probably used to waste a ton of time for them when people would ask the mods to please change their usernames xD
